JAMES KOPP PROFILE
Grant Consultant Profile: 2002-2006

James has been providing grant team leadership for his clients for over four years.  His nonprofit expertise blends seamlessly with his 20 years of experience in advertising and direct marketing.

James has provided services to over a dozen clients ranging from colleges and high schools to arts education organizations, from a health care center to a community parks organization, from performing arts centers to summer camps for special needs youth.  He has written grants for general operating support, capital, and capacity building, as well as for programs ranging from arts education to scholarship and tuition, from campus ministry to artistic performances to folk arts.  He has addressed technology in the schools and in the health care field.  He has worked on foundation and state grants.

James has extensive experience in supporting the program design process with a special strength in budget strategies.  He’s also well versed in the range of approaches to outcomes and program measurements.  His references attest to his ability to quickly gain the respect and confidence of executives, colleagues, volunteers, agencies, and peer consultants.

James’ skills serve him well both in senior management meetings and when working with a program manager to put together a competitive proposal.  He understands advertising media and communications disciplines.  He can create and deliver effective presentations and he can work effectively with technical and support staff in database marketing, direct mail, telemarketing, loyalty retention, print production and internet environments.  And he is comfortable with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and MS PhotoDraw.

In addition to working with his clients, James serves on the Marketing Committee for the American Association of Grant Professionals.  In that capacity since June 2004, he has developed the AAGP Graphics Design Guide, an AAGP membership brochure and the Annual Member Report, and is collaborating on the development of an AAGP comprehensive marketing plan for the organization.  James received the President’s Award for his work on the AAGP Marketing Committee at the 2005 Annual Conference.

Professional Career – Mr. Kopp has over 20 years of senior-level experience in advertising and marketing involving business-to-business and business-to-consumer communications. His background in brand management, strategic planning, marketing, and evaluating advertising concepts is invaluable in developing comprehensive grant plans.

In the 1980s and 90s, James did pro bono work as a consultant to organizations such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra; the New York Consortium for New Music; and WBGO, a jazz public radio station in Newark, NJ.  His family was Founding member of the Garden Preschool Cooperative and the Learning Community Charter School.  James helped organize fundraisers for these organizations.

As Vice President Management Supervisor for Young & Rubicam (1995-1999) and Grey Advertising (1987-1992), James serviced global accounts including the United States Postal Service and the IBM Corporation.  At Y&R he was a key player in developing a fully-integrated communications campaign to promote the US Postal Service’s international division, winning an industry Effie award.  As Vice President at Grey Direct Advertising, James supported the launch of the IBM Personal Computer Company, a successful channel selling PCs and accessories directly to the consumer. He also implemented direct marketing campaigns for all of IBM’s product lines and services.  James also worked as Director of Marketing and Communications at Briarpatch Inc.
